Top 10 Most Common Welding Myths – Truth vs. Reality from a Mobile Welder in Třebíč, Czech Republic

Welding is a skilled trade full of hands-on experience… but also plenty of old myths, misconceptions, and "grandpa's rules" passed down through generations. As a mobile welder based in Třebíč (Vysočina region), who regularly hear these myths almost every day.

Let's debunk the top 10 welding myths once and for all!

1. "The biggest danger in welding is sparks and burns"

Truth: Sparks and burns are real risks, but the long-term danger comes from welding fumes and UV radiation. Without proper extraction and a good respirator, you can seriously damage your lungs over time.

Tip from us: Always invest in quality fume extraction – even for mobile welding jobs, portable extractors and welding respirator make a huge difference today.

2. "Drinking milk protects you from welding fumes"

Truth: This old myth from the 80s still circulates… Milk might increase mucus a bit, but it won't protect you against manganese, hexavalent chromium, or zinc oxide. The only real protection is a proper respirator + good extraction.

3. "You can't weld aluminum nicely with MIG – it has to be TIG"

Truth: Modern pulsed MIG/MAG machines weld aluminum beautifully, quickly, and with almost no burn-through – often better and faster than classic TIG in the field. This saves us tons of time on mobile jobs!

4. "Higher amperage = better weld"

Truth: Too much current = burn-through, porosity, cracks, and heavy distortion. A good weld comes from the right balance of current, voltage, travel speed, and technique. This is especially critical when repairing excavator buckets or trailer frames!

5. "You can weld well even on rusty or dirty material"

Truth: Dirt = porosity, inclusions, poor penetration, and weak welds. Golden rule: 5 minutes with a wire brush + degreaser = 10× better results and much longer weld life.

6. "Welding is a dirty, low-paid job"

Truth: A skilled welder (especially TIG, heavy equipment repairs, stainless steel) earns very good money today – often more than many university graduates. And the dirt? It depends on the workshop – in our mobile service, we arrive clean.

7. "Stick welding (MMA) is outdated and worse than MIG"

Truth: In the field, on construction sites, in rain, or on farms, stick (electrode) welding is often still the best choice – no gas bottle, wind-resistant, super simple. We still use it a lot!

8. "Women can't be good welders"

Truth: Complete nonsense. More and more excellent female welders are out there today – many of them produce more precise TIG welds than plenty of guys.

9. "If the weld looks pretty, it's definitely strong"

Truth: A beautiful, even "stack of dimes" bead can still be full of hidden porosity and cracks inside. Looks ≠ strength. That's why we always verify critical welds on structural work and heavy machinery (visual testing, UT, RT when needed).

10. "You can learn to weld properly over a weekend"

Truth: Basics? Sure. But professional-level skill (especially TIG on stainless, heavy machinery repairs, structural steel welding) takes years of practice + constant learning. That's why clients have trusted us – real experience can't be replaced.

Of course, there are many more myths out there, but these are the ones we hear most often. If you have something at home, on the farm, or at your company that needs repair, welding, or custom fabrication – get in touch.
